BC High School Football Power Rankings

BC High School Football Power Rankings – Dec. 4

Unofficially enjoying getting ripped by readers.

1. Centennial Centaurs – Flat out beat down New Westminster in the semifinals. Aside from maybe the people inside the Centennial locker room, nobody was expecting a blowout and it has set the table for them to take their first provincial championship since 1966. If they play as well as they did defensively against New Westminster, they will be in position to do just that. They can’t take their foot off the pedal in this game or the Hawks will bite them.

2. W.J. Mouat Hawks – Underrated all season but they squeaked into the championship game on a one-point victory, which only continues to feed into their underdog status. Allan Dicks wasn’t healthy the first time the Hawks played the Centaurs, we will have to see how much of an impact he can have on this game, particularly defensively. Centennial only scored under 28 points twice this season, in wins over Terry Fox and this W.J. Mouat team.

3. My Truck – Racked up more clicks than Stephen Spagnuolo did rushing yards this season** and didn’t have a single run in with the law or a need for a mechanic (knock on wood). Why the ol’ boy didn’t make the provincial all-star team is lost on me. That’s discrimination.

4. Vancouver College – Another brutal loss for the Irish. Whether or not you agree with the call at the end of the game, you have to feel for the players and the coaching staff. They did win their conference championship this season and rebounded from a tough non-conference loss against Terry Fox to do so.

5. New Westminster – There were plenty of expectations for the Hyacks coming into this season but they couldn’t quite get over the hump. They did serve notice that they will be a contender for years to come. The goal was to win a provincial championship, but they have never beaten Vancouver College or won a conference championship at this level. Maybe focusing on the latter two would better serve completing the former.

Honourable Mention:

Can I say me? I want to say me, but that would be selfish. At least I didn’t put myself in the top five. Now that would’ve been selfish.

In actuality I would like to thank all the coaches who have been generous enough with their time to talk with me this season when they could’ve just said, “I’m not going to talk to some idiotic blogger.” I had fun covering high school football this year and, time permitting, I hope to be back at it next year.

** Spagnuolo ran for 2,537 yards this season and a meager 32 touchdowns, including the playoffs. Reg Bradshaw’s record of 2,574 yards (regular season only) is safe, but Spagnuolo’s numbers are ridiculous all the same.

Reg Bradshaw…the pride of Centennial Secondary in Coquitlam…also the former high school of Cam Tucker, the fifth best sports personality in the Fraser Valley as voted on by the fans.

    That’s selfish.

Going to be a great game between Centennial and Mouat today and Mr. Miller our thanks to you for providing such incredibly organized football newsletters throughout the 2009 B.C. high school season.
