BC HS Football quotes of the week

After the W.J. Mouat-Notre Dame game, Howard Tsumura from the Province, Cam Tucker from the Abbotsford Times, a reporter from the Abbotsford News and myself talked with W.J. Mouat’s head coach, Dennis Kelly, about the 28-3 win over the Jugglers.

Here are a few quotes from coach Kelly:

“The special thing about (Allan Dicks) is he’s totally not influenced by stats. He’s a very unselfish guy and he’s a great guy to have on the team.”

On their second-round game against Kelowna:

“We just found out about that (traveling to Kelowna for the quarter-finals) today. We were told that all the playoff games would be here and we were a little bit upset that our conference wasn’t given the second bye and then given a tough first-round matchup against Notre Dame so it seems like all the factors are working against us. We’ll be there. We’ll go where ever they want us to go and play the game. Nothing else you can do.”

On his defense stopping Stephen Spagnuolo:

“Gary Naylor (defensive co-ordinator) really came up with a great plan, like he always does. The thing that plays in our favour is that we’ve got very mobile defensive line and linebackers. They can run and are able to go sideline-to-sideline.”

“By and large we were able to contain (Spagnuolo). He did squeak through there and he managed a couple of long runs and scares you but I think because of our mobility we were able to limit his gains and I think as the game wore on he took a physical toll. We were getting to him, he was limping at one point.”

“They (Notre Dame) do have a couple of pass plays that they use but really 90 per cent of their game is Spagnuolo and we were able to do a job on him.”

“One time he taught us a lesson early on because he bounced off about three tackles and ran about 60 yards so after that guys knew you must make sure he’s down and don’t take anything for granted.”
