BC High School Football Playoff Scenarios
With the playoffs just around the corner it’s time to figure out just where these teams will land. BC School Sports might have to resort to some strange tactics to sort things out.
Western Conference
If Vancouver College beats Notre Dame, they win the conference outright. If Notre Dame wins that game and New Westminster loses to Earl Marriott, then Notre Dame wins the conference. However, if both Notre Dame and New Westminster win this weekend, there will be a three-way tie for first place in the conference.
Eastern Conference
If Centennial beats Terry Fox, they win the conference outright. If Terry Fox wins that game and W.J. Mouat loses to Lord Tweedsmuir, then Terry Fox wins the conference. But if both Terry Fox and W.J. Mouat win their games, there will be a three-way tie for first place in the conference.
Okanagan Conference
If Kelowna beats South Kamloops, they win the conference outright. If South Kamloops wins that game and Mt. Boucherie loses to Rutland, South Kamloops wins the conference. But if both South Kamloops and Mt. Boucherie win their games, there will be a three-way tie for first place in the conference.
Here’s how three-way ties are sorted out: Take the three games involving the three teams and whichever team has the best point differential of the three is declared the winner.
In the Western Conference, New Westminster has already played both teams involved in the potential tie. The Hyacks are even in terms of point differential because they lost to Vancouver College by 15 and beat Notre Dame by 15.
Note: It just so happens that 15 points is the maximum amount of point differential one team can be awarded for one game, no matter if they win by 30, 50 or 77 (like Okanagan-Mission did to Mt. Baker last weekend).
Notre Dame doesn’t just need to win to knock VC out of first in the Western Conference, they need to win by 15 or more, which would make all three teams even in terms of point differential. In that case you would think the tie is broken by something fair like a three-legged race, a mascot brawl or maybe even a hotdog-eating contest. But no, total conference point differential is then used to separate the teams.
Upon further review: For total conference point differential, Notre Dame is plus-30, Vancouver College is plus-48, and New West is plus-30. Meaning if VC does lose by 15 or more (the only way this scenario comes into play), Notre Dame will win the conference unless New West also wins by 15 which would leave the Hyacks and Jugglers tied. In that case, see: hotdog eating contest!!!
In the Eastern Conference, W.J. Mouat has already played both teams involved in the potential tie. The Hawks are plus-five in point differential because they beat Terry Fox by eight and lost to Centennial by three.
If Terry Fox beats Centennial by 14 or more that would give them a point differential higher than Mouat’s. If they win by 12 or less then Mouat wins the division based off of point differential. Centennial can’t lose this game and sill win the conference because they are two behind Mouat in point differential. Of course that scenario assumes Mouat beats Tweedsmuir.
In the Okanagan Conference, Mt. Boucherie has already played both teams involved in the potential tie. The Bears are plus-12 in point differential because they beat South Kamloops by more than 15 and lost to Kelowna by three.
Unless Mt. Boucherie loses to Rutland, there is no way South Kamloops can win the division. So for the first time in the short history of the Triple-A Okanagan Conference, someone other than the Titans will win the championship. In the case of a three-way tie, Mt. Boucherie will win the championship because South Kam and Kelowna would be so far behind them in point differential.
