BC High School Football Power Rankings
BC High School Football Power Rankings – Oct. 23
Unofficial and late because of technical issues in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
1. New Westminster – After putting a beat down on Carson Graham to the tune of 549 rushing yards, the Hyacks face their first big test of the season against an undefeated Notre Dame team. Defensively they will throw everything they have against Steve Spagnuolo and the running game. If they can’t keep Spagnuolo out of the endzone it’s going to be a shootout, but the Hyacks have proven they can outscore just about anybody.
2. Centennial – So much for the game of the week. Centennial looked like a well-oiled machine offensively even without the services of quarterback Luke Williams against Lord Tweedsmuir. Now that Lemar Durant will have to spend the rest of the season taking snaps instead of catching passes, they need him to be more than spectacular. It’s going to put more pressure on everyone else.
3. W.J. Mouat – The Hawks don’t control their own destiny as they would need a Centennial loss to be in the mix for the conference title. That said, they still have a shot, and the rest of the schedule is manageable with just St. Thomas More and Lord Tweedsmuir remaining. Last week they beat Dayton (OR) handily.
4. Terry Fox – The Ravens rebounded from their first loss in 16 games to beat struggling St. Thomas More 54-12. The Hawks can put themselves in position to win the division, despite the loss to W.J. Mouat, in fact if they win out they could force a three way tie, if W.J. Mouat wins the rest of their games as well. They play Holy Cross this week and Lord Tweedsmuir the next, before their final game against Centennial.
5. Vancouver College – Even though next week’s battle against New West is on the horizon, the Irish can’t afford to look ahead. This week they have to play Carson Graham, and the Eagles can do some things offensively if they are taken lightly. Eagles quarterback Hayden Nicol might be more important to his team than any other single player in B.C. Yes, the game against New West is huge, but they can’t win that game this weekend.
Honourable Mention:
Notre Dame – Their shot is finally here. The Jugglers have a chance to prove they’re more than just a one-man team Friday night at Mercer Stadium in New Westminster. The Hyacks will be ready and if the Jugglers don’t want to end up with a brutal draw in the playoffs they’re going to have to beat either New West or VC.
South Kamloops – The Titans’ opponent this week, Mt. Boucherie, is on a four-game winning streak. Surprisingly this might produce the biggest test of the year for South Kamloops. They have a bye next week, giving them two weeks to prepare for the season-ending showdown with Kelowna.
Mt. Boucherie/Kelowna - One of these teams is going to challenge South Kamloops for the conference title. Over the next three weeks we will find out who that will be.
Note: Check out the Notre Dame vs. New Westminster game at Mercer Stadium in New Westminster, Friday at 7:30 p.m. Since I’m in Saskatchewan I won’t be able to catch any games this week.
