United surge to the summit as Liverpool limp to second

Manchester United’s 1-0 victory over Bolton Wanderers may be identified as the most significant event in deciding which cabinet the Premier League trophy will be displayed at the end of the season.

Dimitar Berbatov’s late goal ensured that United were placed at the top of the league for the first time in a season that has seen them dramatically rescue some worrying form and cast doubts over Liverpool’s abilities to win the title. 

Liverpool had the opportunity to resume top spot with a home encounter against Merseyside rivals Everton. However, Tim Cahill’s 89th minute leveller made Anfield extremely blue indeed after Gerrard’s strike looked enough to claim all three points.

Elsewhere, Frank Lampard’s last minute winner ensured the wheels are in motion for Chelsea’s salvation mission and the West Londoners will still believe that the title can be brought back down south to Stamford Bridge. Arsenal look like they are beginning to find their best form with a 3-1 demolition of Hull City and a win for lowly West Brom now means that the 5 bottom clubs in the Premier League are all on 21 points
