Larry Fitzgerald proves he’s the best
With a trip to the Super Bowl on the line, Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald showed why he’s the best receiver in the NFL.
Nine catches, 152 yards and three touchdowns.
It didn’t matter who was covering him, Asante Samuel, Sheldon Brown, or anybody else in the Eagles secondary, Fitzgerald was unstoppable in leading the Cardinals to their first conference championship in 60 years.
Only five other players* in NFL history have scored three touchdowns in the NFC Championship game.
No other player has had more receiving yards (419) in a single post-season, passing Jerry Rice. Keep in mind he’s got one more game to go and his opponent, either Baltimore or Pittsburgh, won’t have a single cornerback that can match up with him.
By the end of next weekend we may be talking about the 25-year-old as a first ballot Hall of Fame inductee.
Andy Reid also announced after the game that he would return as head coach of the Eagles next season. It’s likely that we’ve seen the last of Donovan McNabb in an Eagles uniform though. We’ll have to see how that plays out this off-season.
*Otto Graham in 1954, Gary Collins in 1964, Tom Matte in 1968, Preston Pearson in 1975 and Emmitt Smith in 1995 were the only players to have scored three touchdowns in an NFC championship game.
