Another big-name Euro comes to the MLS
North American soccer just got bigger. And it couldn’t have come at a better time.
With the MLS looking to expand over the next few seasons, their newest team took a big step Tuesday as the Seattle Sounders announced the signing of their fourth player: Fredrik Ljungberg.
The former captain of team Sweden and long-time Arsenal star will suit up for the Sounder’s inaugural season, thus making Seattle more of a contender then a bottom-feeder.
With such a bonafide star in their midfield, the Sounders are really making a case for themselves, and letting the league and their own fans know that they will not take the common expansion route of just losing.
The multi-year deal with the 31-year-old improves Seattle’s chances to make the playoffs - only if the Swede stays healthy though - as their team is slowly taking shape. The Sounder’s goalkeeper, USA’s own Kasey Keller, is already a strong addition when it comes to backstopping this new team.
Even though Ljungberg doesn’t know who his future teammates are just yet, he’s glad to be showcasing his talent in the MLS.
“For me, I felt if I was going to do this, it’s a sincere thing, and really help the people over here with soccer, I should go now,” Ljungberg said. “I shouldn’t go in three years’ time when I’m past my peak. I feel really happy to be here.”
With another star like Ljungberg coming to USA, it’s only a matter of time before more big name footballers take the path of “glory” and make an appearance in the MLS as well. David Beckham opened the door for Europeans, and now, the possibilities are advanced.
There were even Thierry Henry transfer to the MLS rumours earlier this year.
Soccer is gaining more attention in both USA and Canada, and with more legit competition coming from Europe, it’s only increasing.
Thanks to Ljungberg and Seattle, fans can now watch the best play in their own backyard.
